La ricerca intende mostrare come il populismo sia un fenomeno in grado di mettere a nudo la struttura stessa delle società in cui si manifesta con maggior energia, e che sia più appropriato parlare di una “macchina populistica”, messa in movimento da specifici rapporti fra la sfera culturale, quella economica e quella politico-istituzionale, sullo sfondo delle trasformazioni storiche che vedono la democrazia sempre più in crisi, a causa di una espansione sempre maggiore del capitalismo e di una mentalità antipolitica. Due importanti “spie” che consentiranno di sondare con criterio rigoroso questa dinamica saranno : il diffondersi delle teorie del complotto; e la mutevole geografia del capitale sociale bridging e bonding – fenomeni e concetti quasi altrettanto elusivi, da indagare e confrontare con metodiche quali-quantitative in una prospettiva comparatistica, consentendo da ultimo di superare l’annosa diatriba fra le ipotesi che collocano le radici del populismo nell’ambito delle dinamiche culturali oppure nel dominio dell’economia.
This research aims to show how populism is a phenomenon capable of laying bare the very structure of the societies in which it manifests itself with greater energy, and that it is more appropriate to speak of a “populist machine”, set in motion by specific relationships between the cultural, the economic and the political-institutional spheres, against the backdrop of historical transformations that see democracy increasingly in crisis, due to an ever greater expansion of capitalism and an anti-political mentality.
Two important “spies” that will allow to probe with rigorous criteria this dynamic will be: the spreading of conspiracy theories; and the changing geography of bridging and bonding social capital – phenomena and concepts almost as elusive of populism itself, to be investigated and compared with qualitative-quantitative methods in a comparative perspective, allowing finally to overcome the age-old diatribe between the hypotheses that place the roots of populism in the sphere of culture or in the domain of economy.
